Milford Softball Rallies To Win State Title 7-3 Over Wachusett

By MyFM's Jake Archer - The Milford High School softball team hadn’t spent much of their time this year playing from behind. That didn’t stop them from having confidence and overcoming a deficit in the Division 1 State Championship game on Saturday.

Milford had not allowed a run in 15 innings, but Wachusett broke that streak in the second inning against Ali Atherton. They jumped right out in front with a single, an error and then another single by senior Lizzie Miles to score both runs. Kiana Lloyd then smacked a single to left that could have scored Miles, but Milford left fielder Maggie Farrell made a strong throw to the plate to nail her. Lloyd would go to second on the throw and then advance to third on a wild pitch before scoring on an RBI infield single by Paige Arvidson.

Milford would eventually get out of the inning down 3-0 and they would answer back with their bats. A hit batter, an infield single and an error loaded the bases to start the inning for the Scarlet Hawks. Kate Irwin would then step to the plate and drive in a run with an infield single followed up by a sacrifice fly by Hockomock League MVP Emily Piergustavo. The lead was now cut to one for Wachusett and Milford had grabbed the momentum back.

At that point, Atherton adjusted and settled in on the mound for Milford. Milford’s offense would just need to find a way to take the lead, which they did come the fourth inning. Piergustavo roped a game tying double before scoring on a single by Farrell for what would end up being the winning run. The Mountaineers would try to stage a comeback in the sixth, but Milford was able to hold them down.

The Hawks would then pour in on in the bottom half of the inning to pad their lead and give them some breathing room. They were able to hold on and capture their first state title since 2013, which was the second of back-to-back championship victories. This was the first win for the seniors who came in four years ago and head coach Steve DiVitto who took over alongside them. The rich tradition of Milford softball was continued over the weekend and they’ll end their season on the highest of notes.
