Milford Advances to Zone 4 Semi-Finals
It took extra innings but Post 59 got the job yesterday in Shrewsbury by a final of 7-6. With the win Milford advances to the Zone 4 playoff semifinals to face top seeded Northbridge in a best of 3 series beginning tonight. Andrew McMillan did the bulk of the damage with three hits including two doubles for Milford. Aiden Wilde blasted an RBI triple in the third inning and his brother Drew went 2-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Milford Starter Kevin Valentine went 6 innings and allowed four earned runs while striking out eight Shrewsbury hitters. Valentine exited in the 7th inning with the game tied 5-5 after giving up a lead-off double to Matt Bonollo. Kyle Nocera came on in relief and retired the 3-4-5 hitters in order to end the inning and the threat. Milford then took the lead in the top half of the 8th on a wild pitch from Shrewsbury reliever Alex Black. Catcher Michael Ryan scored the go ahead run for Post 59. Ryan had walked to start the inning and then advanced to third base on a Blake Hill double before scoring on the wild one from Black. However, the home team Shrewsbury struck back in the bottom of the 8th off of Milford pitcher Kyle Nocera. Black doubled and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly from shortstop Tyler McKeon to tie the game. Milford would return the favor though in the 9th after Drew Wilde led off the inning with an infield hit and then scored on an error by shortstop Tyler McKeon. Hill then retired the side in order in the bottom of the 9th to give Milford the playoff victory. Nocera picked up the win in relief and is now 6-1 overall on the season. Game 1 of Milford’s best of 3 series with 2015 Zone 4 powerhouse Northbridge begins tonight at Fino Field. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. and broadcast time is 6:45 on WMRC and wmrcdailynews.com.
