By MyFM's Jake Archer - The Franklin High School baseball team needed extra innings to take down Hockomock opponent Walpole 4-3 on Wednesday. The team needed a late rally to even get to the extra frames however.
Facing their final out of the ballgame and a 3-0 deficit, Franklin needed a spark. Senior Jake Lyons smacked a single to left field that was followed up by another single from Ryan Hodgkins. Next up, Tyler Gomes drew a walk to load the bases and put pressure on Walpole. The next batter, Josh Macchi, would single up the middle to score both Lyons and Hodgkins and cut the deficit to one.
Now with runners at the corners, Bryan Woelfel would single to drive in Gomes as the tying run. The Rebels would finally shut down the threat to by getting a strikeout and the teams would move on to extras. Both teams would threaten in the eighth and Walpole would again threaten in the top of the ninth, but nothing would come of each scare.
In the bottom of the ninth however, Franklin would finally break through. Jake Lyons singled to leadoff the inning and with one out, Tyler Gomes would draw another walk. The Panthers now had runners at first and second for Josh Macchi who would single up the middle again to score Lyons and walk off with the win.
Franklin moves to 3-2 on the year and will be back in action Thursday in Mansfield at 3:45.
