Donald J. Halpin, Sr., 91, of Hopedale passed away Thursday Nov. 9, 2017, at home surrounded by his family. He was the husband of Eulalia M. (Murphy) Halpin.

A resident of Hopedale for over 40 years, Mr. Halpin worked as a machinist for the former Draper Corporation in Hopedale and the Waters Corporation in Milford. He had previously been a resident of Milford.

Mr. Halpin was born in 1926 in Chelsea the son of the late James J. and Cora E. (MacDonald) Halpin. He attended Chelsea Public Schools and was a US Navy Veteran serving in World War II on the USS Wyandot and the USS Penobscot. 

Donald enjoyed weather tracking and was often acknowledged as one of the first “Weather Watchers” by the on air meteorologists at WBZ television station in Boston. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Hopedale.

In addition to his wife Eulalia of 70 years, he is survived by his 10 children and their spouses; Eulalia and Allen Prince of Oxford, Cynthia and David Stone of Wales, Barbara and Richard Callery of Hopedale, Pamela and Walter Barth of Milford. Nancy and Robert Spencer of Milford, Donald and Kathy Halpin of Bellingham, Susan and Kevin Russell of Bellingham, Kevin Halpin of Hopedale, Sean and Erin Halpin of Milford, Marjorie and Robert Mallard of Sturbridge. He also leaves 20 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. 

He was predeceased by his sister, Cora E. Wingard of Rockford, Michigan.

The family would like to offer a heartfelt “thank you” to the caregivers at Notre Dame Hospice in Worcester for their kindness and devotion to Donald’s care, especially Jackie Skehan.

Visiting hours will be held on Monday, November 13, 2017 from 4- 7 PM in the BUMA-SARGEANT FUNERAL HOME, 42 Congress St., Milford.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, November 14, 2017 at 9 AM from the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM in Sacred Heart Church, 187 Hopedale St., Hopedale. Military honors will conclude the funeral service.
